Doug Garmer

Douglas (Doug) Garmer has been a Monroe County Commissioner since May 9, 2024.  He had previously served the City of Columbia, IL from 2017-2024, including on the Plan Commission (Chairman) and several committees, as well as Alderman-Ward 1.  He is a retired businessman who brings 32 years of Executive Business Leadership experience from a Fortune 30 company to his Monroe County office.

Doug earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Webster University in 1996.  He also earned Chancellor’s Certificates in Public Policy Administration (Planning & Zoning and Economic Development) from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2017-2018.

Doug has served as Vice President of the AT&T Veterans, St. Louis/Metro East Chapter employee resource group from 2017-2019. He also served as a Director on the Human Support Services board from 2015-2022, as well as several committees, including Finance Committee (Chairman).  He is a 23 year member of The Way Church in Columbia, IL and has been serving as an elder since 2016.

Doug and his wife Sandy have been married for 35 years and have lived in Monroe County for 23 years.  Their two daughters were raised in Monroe County, where they attended K-12 public schools.
